We usually watch White-breasted Nuthatches hitching their way down tree trunks. But perched atop a pumpkin? That's a new one for us. Russ Ergen of St. Cloud, Minnesota, captured this nuthatch
(Sitta carolinensis) posing in his backyard in December 2008. "I had the pumpkin sitting near some water, and the birds used it as a perch before going to get a drink," he says.
Russ used a Sony a350 with a 75-300mm lens.
